My Business Card layouts

Layouts for my business card

When creating my business card I had to put all the correct information needed so that that the potential customer would be able read and remember the information clearly. For instance, I put my Name, Title, Contact Number and my website. This gives the customer two ways to contact me if they need a graphic designer for their business. My business card size will be 10x8

My Chosen Idea-The feather

I have decided to go with the feather because it has been presented all throughout my work and represents myself really well. I say this because like a feather, my style of drawing is free-flow, delicate and sometime can be complex and intricate. A feather is easily created and can be manipulated in any computer software or traditional way, therefore making it a simple and peaceful symbol to represent myself with. Here are some rough sketches of feather i created on the bamboo graphics tablet using the software 'illustrator'.
I decided to use no colour because I felt as if black, white and grey made them stand out most and since they are just sketch I know I shouldn't put too much detail in as detail and complexity will be added later on in my development.

Developing my Initial Design

These are my logos and the developments I have improved upon them. Using the feather as original inspiration

Initial Logo Design : Colour Theory

Colour Theory is when people immediately represent a colour with a feeling/emotion. For instance red symbolizes danger/anger/hate. If i had a red logo it could give the client a bad physiological impression of me therefore it would be more effective to use a lighter colour which represents peace/purity/positivity. Colour theory is recognized all around the world, however colours represent different emotions in different countries. In England red can means danger however in Japan it is a symbol of strength and courage. I made my logo in different colours so i could see not only which worked best, but which logo the most non threatening however strong and powerful. Choosing a colour for a logo is a important process.

My four initial Ideas

Here are my four initial ideas and in the first two I have shown how I could have development them to give me a perspective of how and what I could develop them with materials wise. I have used a cupcake in the first one because the logo is meant to represent myself and I feel  that I am a sweet person to other, however the negative aspect of this cupcake logo, is that it may seem slightly childish and the potential customer will think I'm unprofessional and won't get the work done. Etching Workshop With UEL Students

Unlike most lessons led solely by our teacher, a group of East London University students taught us how to use a technique called 'Etching'. Etching is a simple printing technique that can take time and effort but result in a beautiful piece of art using ink. I have broken this process into 3 essential and 1 optional steps.

Preparation:
You will need:

Scalpel, needle or something with a sharp edge
Thick Silver Foil paper at least 0.5cm thick
Sketching paper
Pencil
Black ink
Old rag or cloth
Tracing paper
Rolling press

Step One: There are two ways you can go about this. Either you can risk mistake by going straight onto scratching onto your paper or you can sketch your design onto paper and then use tracing paper to copy your design and transfer it to the foil paper. This is me sketching my ideas out beforehand.

Step two: Using your scalpel, gently scratch the surface of the silver paper to reveal the white paper underneath the silver surface. Make sure you don't dig too deep as the ink will seep through the bottom of the paper and the image will not transfer as evenly, however if you scratch halfway into the paper the image will come out crisp and even. This is me using a needle to create some small details.
Step three: Once the whole image is scratched into the paper, using a old ruler or spatula spread the ink evenly over the silver page, Then using the old rag to pressure the ink into the crevices you created. Tip-Twisting your hand in circular motion whilst putting pressure on the ink works the ink into the scratches more. The more in compressed in those lines the better.

Step four: Using the rolling press create a sandwich effect by placing a piece of paper onto the board of the rolling press, then placing your print upside down onto the paper and then placing another piece of paper over the top of your print to protect the back of you scratched silver paper. Carefully and slowly roll your print through the rolling press until your print has gone all the way through and then separate the three pieces of paper. You now have a print of your scratched picture. This is what your print will come out like.

Tips

-Remember that if you are using any form of type in your work it will come out backwards unless you write it backwards in which case it will come out the right way.

-You can skip Step one, but be if anything goes wrong you can't go back.

-If you need to fill an entire area with ink, then cut out the outline of that area and using your fingers peel it off slowly and be careful not to rip a hole through it.

Typography and the way it makes us feel

Today we have been experimenting and exploring the ways in which fonts and colors effect our perspective on words. For instance, How the background colour with make the foreground colour look more bold, vibrant or perhaps stand out more. Like my word 'Warm'. Here I have used a aboriginal text, the text being associated with hot countries I thought this would describe the word more aptly. I also used a selection a warm colour scheme from a website I was inspired by, using Illustrator to collect the exact colours from the website and using it in this text. All the colours i used were warm colours on the colour chart. On the opposite side of the scale, I decided to pick the word 'Cold'. I used different shades of blue because blue is a cold colour on the colour chart and is the most associated colour with cold. I used a gradients background so that the different shades of blue did not blnd in the with black or white background and still contrasted.

Working With Adobe Illustrator

Screen Printing

Today we were screen printing with the paper cut outs we made last lesson. Here is a step by step on how we did it will instructive photographs.

This is my end result. I think this is a good example of screen printing because it has clearly printed the word I wanted to print. If I could make this better I could decrease the thickness of the ink mix I was using because the ink wasn't coming through the screen because it was so thick and some of the little hole in the screen were blocked so the ink couldn't come through. Although a mistake, I believe this is a exciting effect because it looks different and unique which will make it stand out.

Firstly, since I had no pink ink, I made it buy mixing red and white ink to create this. In order to make the ink thinner I used textile medium to water it down. I used around 40% ink and 60% textile medium. This is the end creation.

Side note; Always put down newspaper to protect your surface because this technique can somes get messy.

I then made sure the paper was secured to the screen as

Bob Ryan

The work of Mr Rob Ryan-A British Born artist who specialises in paper-cutting, screen-printing and painting.
Like what we are currently creating Mr Ryan got famous for his impressive detailed paper cut outs, he is a key character for inspiration because his work is daring and intricate. Where most people assume paper cut outs are very simple and something of which a child would create, these creation would have taken hours if not days to create. The complexity of his cut outs are astonishing and are very creative. Instead of paper cut outs of drawings, we will be using typography in our work.

My personal object

This is my personal object that I decided to chose for my observation drawing task in different medias. In this photo I used Ink and Pen to imitate the sharp detailed lines of the feather where it was lighter in places but darker in others. I very much like the contrast of this as the black makes it stand out from the white background which makes it visually appealing and eye catching. This feather was given to me by somebody really special in my life and represents them. The person in question was a soft, gentle person who look as delicate as a feather...Hence..the feather..
In this piece I decided since I liked the black and white contrast effect, I would invert it and create a white and black drawing. The materials I used; Black sugar paper and White chalk. I like the different gradients of the black, greys and whites mixing to create a nice tonal effect. I also think that the white in the sides of the feather accurately show where the light was reflecting off the silver surface of the smooth curled sides. If I could improve upon this I would have perhaps used my finger to smudge the edges of the feather to make it look softer.
Using the technique of Monoprinting-where I used a etching plate and ink spread evenly on top of the plate and rolled it out to create a even surface, placing a piece of paper lightly on the surface of the ink draw a pattern with a blunt end of a pencil to create this. When I put pressure on the paper, the ink was pressed on the paper and create a print. If I was to improve this, I would have made more details because it appears very 2d. I would also decide to add a different coloured ink to make it more exciting.
